Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, Aadan Barre Duale, has addressed the ongoing political dispute between the Federal Government of Somalia and Jubaland’s regional leader, Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Madobe).
Speaking about Madobe’s recent visit to Nairobi, Duale emphasized that Kenya respects Somalia’s sovereignty and will not interfere in its internal affairs. However, he acknowledged that Kenya is playing a diplomatic role in resolving tensions between Mogadishu and Jubaland.
“A reconciliation process is underway to resolve the differences between Somalia’s Federal Government and Ahmed Madobe. His visit to Kenya was diplomatic, and our goal is to foster understanding between the two sides,” said Duale.
Madobe’s trip to Nairobi sparked widespread reactions, particularly over reports that Kenya facilitated his travel with a private aircraft.
While Somalia’s Federal Government and Jubaland authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the matter, tensions have been high over the upcoming national elections, with differences on whether the process should be state-controlled or a broader public election.
