Ahmed Mursal, a high-ranking leader of the Al-Qaeda-affiliated group Al-Shabaab, surrendered to the Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) team in Hudur, Bakool regional capital.
Mursal, responsible for surveillance and recruiting child soldiers, turned himself in amid increasing military pressure on the group from various fronts.
This surrender follows another blow to Al-Shabaab, with reports from state Media indicating on Monday that a senior, unnamed leader was killed in a US airstrike in the Middle Jubba region on Sunday. The Somali National Army (SNA) confirmed that the operation, supported by the US, specifically targeted a key figure involved in orchestrating attacks and leading the group’s war efforts.
Government sources say the events underscore the intensifying efforts to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s leadership and disrupt its operations, reflecting a coordinated response to counter their activities in the region.
