President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has identified education and knowledge as the most important tools for tackling poverty in Somalia, while announcing plans to establish another public university in the country.
Speaking at the launch of the Abuur Initiative and the Somali Emergency & Critical Care Training Center at Somali National University in Mogadishu, the president said expanding access to higher education was essential to Somalia’s development.
“The most important tool in the fight against poverty is education,” Hassan Sheikh said.
The president noted that Somali National University is currently the only university owned by the Somali government, and said his administration is working to establish a second public university where Somali citizens can pursue higher education.
“Somali National University is the only university owned by the country, and we are working to establish a second university where the public can pursue higher education,” he said.
Hassan Sheikh said the government’s plans are intended to expand opportunities for Somalis to acquire knowledge and professional skills, which he described as critical to addressing poverty and supporting the country’s long-term development.
The remarks came during an event highlighting efforts to strengthen education and specialised medical training in Somalia, including the launch of the Somali Emergency & Critical Care Training Center.
The proposed second public university would expand the country’s public higher-education system and provide additional opportunities for students seeking university education.
