The coastal city of Mariupol has been evacuated by women, children and the elderly people who have been under siege for a month after Russian forces put full force to capture the control of the city.
A UN-sponsored project sparked by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ visit to Kyiv has provided an opportunity for hundreds of people in the conflict zone.
Phase 3 of the evacuation of people trapped in the Iron Factory, the stronghold of the Ukrainian Army, was carried out by women, children and the elderly who were unable to escape from the conflicting sides.
A Ukrainian government official said the opportunity was a safe heaven for families worried about heavy missiles coming from Russia to avoid defeat in the invasion of his country.
Russia and Ukraine have both claimed victory in heavy fighting in the coastal city of Mariupol, with Kyiv troops concentrating on the Iron Factory while Moscow is besieged.
