Galmudug has suspended all preparations for the local council elections in Dhusamareb, Adado, Abudwaq, Hobyo and Balanbale in Galgadud regions.
Galmudug Information Minister Ahmed Shire Falagle who spoke to the media explained that the reason for the cancellation of the local council elections was that the national elections were scheduled to be held within 60 days following the concensus on the national elections stalemate.
“We cannot hold two elections together. For 90 days the activities of the local council elections have been suspended. The Ministry of Interior, which has been working on this task, should focus on national elections, incoming delegates and ensuring security,” said Minister Falagle.
What are the challenges facing Galmudug in the local council elections?
There were strong disagreements over the formation of the Galmudug local Council, with lawmakers Yasin Sheikh Mohamed and Abdulkadir Juun Bare criticizing the Galmudug Ministry of Interior for its distribution.
Clan-led elders have objected to the way the Galmudug District Council was being run, citing the example of a committee appointed by Minister Waayeel to implement the elections.
In some towns, there have been complaints about the clan-based distribution of power in the local council elections but the pressure has been eased by Galmudug’s agreement to hold national elections within 60 days.
Dispute had erupted in the last few days Balanbal district council of Galgadud region after the Galmudug state ministry of interior announced the list of members of Balanbale district council in Galgadud region.
