USAID Commits $29 Million to Strengthen Food Security and Resilience in Somalia.

The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has pledged nearly $29 million to bolster resilience and food security for Somalia’s most vulnerable populations. This significant commitment comes amid projections that 6.9 million Somalis will require humanitarian assistance in 2024 due to severe weather conditions, insecurity, and pervasive poverty.

The funding aims to address the dire humanitarian needs while building sustainable livelihoods for displaced and marginalized communities across Somalia. USAID will partner with renowned international organizations, including World Vision and Save the Children, to ensure effective implementation and targeted support.
Key Highlights of the Funding.

According to a X post on official account of the USAID Somalia, key highlights include Support for 80,000 Vulnerable Households:. The funding will directly benefit households facing food insecurity, with a focus on those most at risk due to displacement or marginalization.
Also, Initiatives under this program will aim to create long-term economic opportunities, empowering communities to recover and thrive.
Climate Resilience will also get a portion of the funds which will be used to mitigate the devastating impacts of climate-related disasters, such as droughts and floods, which have exacerbated food insecurity in the region.

USAID’s support aligns with its commitment to addressing hunger, food insecurity, and the challenges posed by climate change. Speaking on the funding, the U.S. Ambassador to Somalia emphasized the critical need for this assistance, noting its potential to save lives and strengthen Somalia’s recovery trajectory.
