US warns Ethiopia-Eritrea tensions could threaten regional security

The United States has warned that rising tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea could have consequences for security across the Horn of Africa, urging both countries to exercise restraint and return to dialogue.

In a statement issued by the US Department of State, spokesperson Thomas “Tommy” Pigott said increasing cross-border tensions between the two countries had the potential to affect the wider region.

“The Horn of Africa cannot sustain another military conflict and humanitarian crisis,” Pigott said, warning that a new conflict could also jeopardize ongoing US cooperation with both Ethiopia and Eritrea on shared interests.

Washington urged Ethiopia and Eritrea to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of their neighbours and to avoid actions that could further escalate tensions.

The United States also called on the two countries to exercise maximum restraint and return to dialogue and cooperation under the framework of the 2018 peace agreement.

“Peace through dialogue is the only path toward sustainable security, economic growth, and prosperity,” Pigott said.

The US statement comes amid heightened tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea, adding to growing international concern over the potential for renewed conflict in the Horn of Africa.

Washington said it remains focused on preventing further escalation and encouraged both countries to address their differences through peaceful engagement and cooperation.
