President Hassan Sheikh receives letters of credence from new EU and Turkish Ambassadors.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has received the Letters of Credence from the newly appointed ambassadors of the European Union and Türkiye to Somalia in separate ceremonies at the Villa Somalia Presidential Palace.

President Hassan Sheikh received László Máthé, the newly appointed EU Ambassador to Somalia, who formally presented his Letters of Credence to the Somali president.
Máthé’s appointment follows his earlier presentation of copies of his credentials to Somalia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hassan Mohamed Ali. The ministry said Somalia and the EU intend to further strengthen cooperation in areas including peace and security, governance, trade and development.

The President also received Ferhat Alkan, the newly appointed Ambassador of Türkiye to Somalia, who presented his Letters of Credence during a separate meeting at Villa Somalia.
Alkan assumed his duties as Türkiye’s ambassador to Somalia on September 21, 2026, succeeding Alper Aktaş. He is a career diplomat who has previously served in several diplomatic and senior foreign-policy positions, including as Türkiye’s ambassador to Mozambique.

The appointment of the two envoys comes as Somalia continues to maintain close diplomatic and development partnerships with both the European Union and Türkiye.
Somalia and the EU cooperate in areas including security, governance and development, while Türkiye has maintained a broad partnership with Somalia covering security, development, trade and education.

The presentation of Letters of Credence formally marks the ambassadors’ accreditation to Somalia and the beginning of their diplomatic representation in the country.
