The Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Jama, on Friday chaired the 21st meeting of the Speakers of the East African Community (EAC) parliaments in Arusha, Tanzania, in a move described as a significant opportunity for Somalia.
Jamaac currently serves as chairperson of the Speakers of EAC member-state parliaments, allowing Somalia to take a leading role in the regional parliamentary forum.
The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation among parliaments, promoting parliamentary diplomacy, sharing experiences, and ensuring that East African integration delivers tangible benefits to the people of the region.
During the meeting, Speaker Jamaac highlighted the progress made by Somalia’s 11th Parliament, particularly in state-building, constitutional reforms, security and the rule of law, public financial management, and economic development. He said the Parliament has passed more than 56 laws and 18 resolutions.
He also said the House of the People is committed to fully carrying out its constitutional responsibilities, particularly legislation and oversight, while serving the interests of the Somali people and contributing to stronger regional cooperation and integration.
Jamaac stressed that the future of the EAC depends on strong cooperation, resilient institutions, and effective parliaments that work in the interests and aspirations of their people.
He said Somalia remains committed to playing its full role in advancing these objectives.
He further announced that Somalia is ready to host the 22nd meeting of the Speakers of EAC parliaments, which is scheduled to take place in Mogadishu at the end of January 2027.
The Speaker expressed optimism that the EAC parliamentary leadership will be welcomed to Somalia’s capital, saying the meeting would provide an opportunity to strengthen joint efforts toward building a united, prosperous and peaceful East African Community.
