UN calls on Federal Government and Opposition to continue talks

A statement from the United Nations has said that UN Secretary-General António Guterres is closely following the situation in the federal government of Somalia, and has praised both the Federal Government and the opposition for continuing their dialogue.

The UN encouraged the two sides to engage in discussions in order to achieve positive results, particularly by addressing the key issues currently on the table that are still in dispute between them.

“The United Nations encourage the Federal Government and the opposition to hold talks in order to achieve positive results regarding the country’s situation particularly on the issues on the table that the two sides disagree on.”The statement said

It was also noted that efforts are underway by members of the international community to create another opportunity for the Federal Government and the opposition to resume talks.

These negotiations had ended in disagreement at the close of last week’s final discussions that had been progressing over several days.

The message mirrors a similar call made earlier by the European Union. Leaders of the Government and officials of the opposition who are aligned within the same framework were urged to stay committed to continuing their talks with sincerity, with the aim of reaching a successful conclusion.
