UK Announces $40 Million in Additional Humanitarian and Health Aid for Somalia

The United Kingdom has pledged an additional $40 million in humanitarian and health aid to Somalia, targeting vulnerable communities affected by conflict, drought, and climate-related crises. This brings the UK’s total humanitarian assistance to Somalia for 2024 and 2025 to over $106 million.

Announcing the funding on Monday, the British Embassy in Mogadishu said the aid will provide emergency food, clean water, and healthcare, while also supporting displaced populations with shelter and essential services. A portion of the funding will go towards climate resilience initiatives, including early warning systems, disaster preparedness, and livelihood support.

British Ambassador to Somalia Mike Nithavrianakis emphasized the UK’s continued support for the country, stating:

“This funding demonstrates the UK’s steadfast commitment to Somalia and her people. By collaborating with trusted partners, we are ensuring that essential services reach those who need them most while also laying the groundwork for a more resilient and sustainable future. We go far when we go together.”

The aid package includes support for major humanitarian organizations, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the World Food Programme (WFP), UNICEF, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). These organizations will use the funding to deliver emergency food, healthcare, and nutrition programs, as well as assist displaced communities with shelter and essential services.

The announcement comes as Somalia grapples with the aftermath of a below-average rainy season, which has exacerbated food insecurity and left millions at risk. The UK’s additional support is expected to enhance humanitarian response efforts and bolster long-term resilience strategies for communities most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and conflict.
