Turkish President Erdogan in Phone Call with Abiy Urges Ethiopia to Address Somali Concerns in Mediation Efforts

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to take steps that would alleviate Somalia’s concerns regarding its unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. This call was made during a recent phone conversation between the two leaders, emphasizing Turkey’s role in mediating tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia.

Erdogan highlighted that addressing these concerns is crucial for facilitating the ongoing mediation process aimed at resolving the disputes between the neighboring countries. The tensions primarily stem from a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ethiopia and Somaliland, which has led to strained relations with Somalia.

During the phone call, Erdogan reiterated Turkey’s commitment to ending the discord and underscored the importance of Ethiopia’s actions in restoring stability. He noted that Ethiopia’s efforts to respect Somalia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty would be a key factor in easing the current tensions.

The Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, also confirmed that delegations from Somalia and Ethiopia are scheduled to meet in Ankara next week to discuss the matter further. Fidan stated that resolving these issues, particularly ensuring Ethiopia’s access to the seas while recognizing Somali territorial integrity, is essential for mending relations between the two countries.

This diplomatic engagement follows a previous discussion on July 29 between President Erdogan and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, where Turkish mediation efforts were a focal point.

In his statement, Erdogan also addressed broader regional issues, including Turkey’s stance on the Gaza conflict, and urged Ethiopia to support international efforts for peace and justice.

“Underscoring that Türkiye continues its efforts aimed at ending the tension between Somalia and Ethiopia, President Erdoğan noted that steps to be taken by Ethiopia that would eliminate Somalia’s concerns regarding its unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity will facilitate the process.

Further stressing that Israel maintains genocide in Gaza, President Erdoğan said that Ethiopia supporting the Palestinian cause by favoring the conscience of the humanity will contribute to the international community’s efforts for a lasting peace” Official X account of the presidency of Turkey posted.

As the situation develops, Turkey’s role as a mediator continues to be crucial in navigating the complex dynamics between Somalia and Ethiopia, aiming for a resolution that respects the concerns and sovereignty of all parties involved.
