Turkey has announced plans to expand military training for Somali forces in 2027 to strengthen national security and enable Somali troops to take greater responsibility for protecting their country.
The Turkish government said its agreement with Somalia includes training and equipping Somali security forces, which Ankara says have made significant contributions to improving security in the country.
Turkey’s Ministry of National Defence said newly recruited soldiers and military officers received training in 2026, both in Somalia and at military camps in Turkey.
Ankara said the training programme would be expanded next year as part of the ongoing defence cooperation agreement between the two countries.
Turkey has trained Somali special forces, including the Gorgor commandos and the Haramcad special police unit, which play important roles in the country’s security operations.
There are also plans to train Somali air force and naval personnel as part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s military capabilities, according to available reports.
Turkey remains a key security partner of Somalia, providing military training and equipment as the Somali government works to strengthen its security institutions and gradually assume full responsibility for national security.
