Sweden pledges continued support for Prison reform in Somalia

The Government of Sweden has announced its commitment to participate in efforts to reform prisons in the federal Government of Somalia.

Sweden’s ambassador to Somalia, Ambassador Hans Lundquist, held talks in Nairobi with a delegation led by Somalia’s Correctional Service Commander, Major General Mohamed Sheekh Maxamuud.

The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the areas of security and justice.

Ambassador Lundquist said the Swedish government is ready to continue its support to the Correctional Service, particularly through projects aimed at improving living conditions inside prisons.

He emphasized that these changes are intended to align with international human rights standards, ensuring that every detainee receives the rights guaranteed by law.

Major General Mohamed Sheikh Mohamud on his part expressed his appreciation to Sweden for its continued backing.

He noted that a key goal of the Somali Correctional Service is to transform prisons into rehabilitation-focused facilities, offering comprehensive services, in collaboration with international partners.

Somalia and Sweden maintain close diplomatic ties, spanning security, economic, and social cooperation.
