Somalia:Has the security improved in the capital or worsened after deployment of the new police trained in Uganda?

Security in Mogadishu, which was worse rising from youth related gang crimes and terror activities before the re-election of the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has tremendously improved for the past few weeks.

After the election of 15 May 2023, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his government began the first test of finding a solution to Mogadishu’s security, while at that time there were youth gangs causing attacks on the capital, robbery by the gangs and planned killings that are unknown to the perpetrators were common.

The Federal Government of Somalia has transferred the security of the capital to the new police force that is trained as a military, who received training in Uganda, while their salaries and wages are paid by the United Arab Emirates.

Having received military-police training, the soldiers were tasked with bolstering security in Mogadishu and contribute to countering terrorist activities.

According to different sources, the forces which are part of units tasked with securing Mogadishu, immediately began night patrols in the areas where they were stationed and improved security

The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, together with his Ugandan counterpart, Yoweri Museveni, on March 19, 2023,closed training units of the Armed Forces transferred to the Capital Security, which are part of the Armed Forces.

The army that the President brought from Uganda for training was brought down from Mogadishu a few days later, and they were stationed at the Hiil-Wenyne camp located between Mogadishu and Balcad in the Middle Shabelle region.

The President who visited the Hiil-Weyne camp on April 7, 2023 and visited the army trained in Uganda urged them to work with the different forces that are working together such as the Police, Security and Military as their training composed of all security sectors

President Hassan Sheikh who spoke to the Capital Security Force said, “You are now in charge of the security of the capital, today you are the people’s police and they have high hope in you, All eyes are on you, the Somali mother who is afraid, the business man who is in fear for his business activities, the peace elder who is standing for peace and the people’s well-being but feeling threat and insecure, all people feeling threat and insecure you are their hope,” President Hassan

Mustaqbal Media, which has reported on the activities of the army transferred to the security of the capital, confirmed that some it is readers who they contacted told them that the security of Mogadishu has improved and is better than before the new police was transferred and took charge, saying that they fasted peacefully during the month of Ramadan compared the previous months of fasting.

When you drive through the main roads of the capital and the streets of the capital, you will see soldiers wearing uniforms that look like the national army who are engaged in operations to ensure security, conducting inspections of different types of vehicles that operate in the capital city.

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the President of the federal government of Somalia said that the first focus of his government is security, which is where the need is the most.
