Somalia: Wadajir Party Leader Decries Ethiopia-Somaliland Security Talks as “Provocative” Amidst Regional Strain

In response to the recent military cooperation talks between Ethiopia and Somaliland, Wadajir Party leader and Member of Parliament Abdirahman Abdishakur has condemned the meeting as “provocative,” warning that it could exacerbate already heightened tensions in the region.

Abdishakur, a prominent figure known for his vocal stance on regional affairs, expressed deep concern over the Ethiopia-Somaliland security talks held in Addis Ababa. He emphasized the urgent need for the international community to intervene, specifically addressing what he perceives as Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s “imperialistic aspirations” and Ethiopia’s alleged disregard for the sovereignty of its neighboring countries.

The military cooperation discussions took place just a week after a controversial sea access agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland, a move that strained diplomatic relations in the Horn of Africa. Somalia’s central government swiftly condemned the agreement, labeling it an act of “aggression” and a violation of its sovereignty.

Abdishakur’s reaction underscores the complexities within Somalia’s political landscape, as different factions navigate the evolving regional dynamics. As tensions persist, international observers continue to monitor the situation, with calls for diplomatic solutions to address the intricate challenges in the Horn of Africa.
