The Federal Government of Somalia has provided details about a joint tough military operation conducted in collaboration with the United States in the Middle Shabelle region of Hirshabelle State.
The operation, which was an airstrike, reportedly targeted and killed senior militants belonging to the armed group ‘AS.’
According to a government statement, the airstrike was aimed at militants who were planning an attack on the city of Alkowsar.
The preemptive strike successfully neutralized their threat before they could execute their intended operation.
Somalia’s federal government commended the ongoing cooperation between Somali National Army forces, U.S. military forces, and local militia groups, known as Macawiisley, in countering ‘AS’ militants in the Middle Shabelle region.
In recent weeks, the United States has intensified its airstrikes across southern, central, and northern Somalia. Drone strikes have increasingly targeted militant strongholds, including bases used by both ‘AS’ and ISIS fighters.
