Somalia, Türkiye mark 15 years of renewed relations

Somalia and Türkiye are marking the 15th anniversary of the renewal of diplomatic relations and friendship between the two countries, with a major ceremony being held in Mogadishu attended by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

The anniversary commemorates the landmark visit by then-Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to Somalia on August 19, 2011, at a time when the country was facing severe conflict and a devastating humanitarian crisis.

Erdoğan’s visit, accompanied by his family, was widely regarded as a significant demonstration of solidarity with Somalia during one of the country’s most difficult periods. Türkiye subsequently expanded its engagement with Somalia beyond humanitarian assistance, developing a broad strategic partnership.

Over the past 15 years, the two countries have strengthened cooperation in a range of areas, including trade and investment, security and defence, fisheries, technology and economic development.

Türkiye has also remained an important development and humanitarian partner for Somalia, supporting infrastructure and institutional development alongside humanitarian and economic initiatives.

The anniversary provides an opportunity for both countries to highlight the evolution of their relationship from an initial humanitarian partnership into a wider strategic alliance.

For many Somalis, Türkiye’s engagement during the 2011 humanitarian crisis remains an important part of the bilateral relationship. The partnership has since developed through high-level political engagement, economic cooperation and security collaboration.

The 15th anniversary is therefore being marked as a reflection of the deepening ties between Mogadishu and Ankara and their shared commitment to expanding cooperation in the years ahead.
