Somalia to launch first Satellite from Warsheekh in 2027

Somalia is expected to witness a major milestone in its emerging space programme in 2027, with the country’s first satellite planned to be launched from a new space facility being constructed by Türkiye in Warsheekh.

Outgoing Turkish Ambassador to Somalia Alper Aktaş announced the planned launch during a farewell ceremony in Mogadishu attended by senior Somali officials and other dignitaries.

Aktaş said Türkiye is constructing the space facility in Warsheekh, northeast of Mogadishu, which is expected to serve as a “launch centre for the programme” . He said the first Türkiye-developed satellite is planned to be launched from Somali soil in 2027.

The project is also expected to include facilities for testing long-range rocket systems, adding a significant aerospace and defence component to the growing Türkiye-Somalia partnership.

The ambassador described the planned satellite launch as a historic milestone that would reflect the expanding strategic relationship between Ankara and Mogadishu.

Beyond space cooperation, Aktaş said Türkiye is also supporting Somalia in efforts to develop its blue economy and mineral resources. Turkish fishing vessels and planned agreements on natural resources are expected to form part of the broader economic partnership between the two countries.

The planned space facility represents one of the most significant elements of Türkiye’s expanding strategic presence in Somalia, while providing Mogadishu with an opportunity to develop capabilities in the emerging space and aerospace sectors.

If completed as planned, the 2027 launch would mark the first time a satellite is launched from Somali territory.
