Parts of Puntland State have received rainfall as Somalia continues to face a severe drought, while the United Nations has warned of a near-certain El Niño event during the upcoming Deyr season.
The rainfall has been reported in parts of Puntland, offering temporary relief to communities affected by deteriorating water and pasture conditions.
However, the wider humanitarian situation remains concerning, with the United Nations warning of a 97 to 100 percent probability of severe flooding across Somalia between October and December.
The combination of prolonged drought and the prospect of heavy flooding poses a major challenge to communities already facing fragile livelihoods, water shortages and limited access to basic services. Heavy rains could also cause displacement and damage infrastructure in vulnerable areas.
Meanwhile, Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has been working with federal and state authorities and humanitarian partners to strengthen preparations for the anticipated flooding. Commissioner Mahamuud Moallim, alongside South West State Minister for Humanitarian Affairs Nasir Arush, met with UN Deputy Special Representative on Saturday , Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator George Conway and OCHA Somalia’s Crispen Rukasha as part of wider plan to discuss coordinated measures to protect vulnerable communities and reduce flood risks.
The officials emphasised the importance of early action and anticipatory action to reduce the impact of flooding before it occurs, calling for swift coordination between SoDMA, the Federal Government, Federal Member States and humanitarian partners.
Commissioner Mahamuud Moallim stressed that collective action would be essential to reduce the forecast risks and called for urgent coordination to strengthen preparedness and protect communities.
Authorities and humanitarian agencies are expected to continue monitoring weather conditions closely as the Deyr rainy season approaches, particularly in areas vulnerable to flooding and displacement.
