Somalia is seeking to turn its membership in the East African Community (EAC) into tangible opportunities for trade, investment and mobility for its citizens and business community, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ali Mohamed Omar, alias Ali Balcad has said.
Speaking at the third East African Community Conference (EACON 2026), which opened in Mogadishu, Balcad said the forum was part of ongoing efforts to raise public awareness of the economic opportunities available within the regional market.
He said the conference brings together businesspeople, politicians, diplomats, embassies, universities and major companies to discuss how Somalia and other EAC member states can benefit from their shared market.
Balcad noted that previous conferences had produced recommendations requiring implementation by businesses, government institutions and other relevant stakeholders.
He expressed hope that this year’s meeting would generate practical strategies to strengthen Somalia’s ability to benefit from its membership.
As the newest member of the regional bloc, Somalia is working to expand its representation and participation in various EAC institutions, according to the state minister.
“As the newest member of the regional bloc, Somalia is working to expand its representation and participation in various EAC institutions,” Balcad said.
He added that Somalis, who already have established business and investment interests across the region, could play a significant role in strengthening economic ties. He also noted that the Somali government maintains regular engagement with counterpart ministries in other member states.
Balcad further identified the modernisation of Somalia’s passport as an outstanding priority in facilitating the movement of Somali citizens across EAC member countries.
He expressed optimism that progress would be made on the issue next year, potentially making regional travel easier for Somalis who meet the required conditions.
While EAC membership offers Somalia new economic and commercial opportunities, Balcad’s remarks is said to highlight the need to translate these benefits into tangible gains for Somali businesses and the wider public
