Kenya has launched security operations targeting Al-Shabaab militants in Mandera and Garissa counties following an increase in attacks and explosions in parts of the two northeastern regions, according to Kenyan security officials.
Security forces have deployed police officers and specialised counterterrorism units to areas recently affected by attacks and explosions to conduct investigations and pursue suspected militants.
Authorities have reportedly arrested several individuals suspected of belonging to Al-Shabaab or having links to the group. The suspects, who are believed to be from the affected areas, are being questioned, although officials have not disclosed the number of people arrested or provided further details.
The operations follow a series of security incidents in Mandera and Garissa, including attacks on security installations and vehicles travelling through the affected areas.
On Friday, a Kenyan security officer and a member of his security detail were killed in a roadside explosion, according to the report.
The latest operations form part of Kenya’s efforts to contain the threat posed by Al-Shabaab, which has carried out attacks in areas near the Kenya-Somalia border.
Authorities have not provided further details on the duration of the operations or whether additional arrests have been made.
