Somali Military Court Chief says father was Killed to Disrupt Prosecution of 2017 Zoobe Bombing

The chairman of Somalia’s First Instance Court of the Armed Forces, General Hassan Ali Nur Shute, has revealed that Al-Shabaab militants allegedly killed his father in an attempt to disrupt proceedings in the case involving the October 14, 2017, Zoobe bombing.

Speaking on the ninth anniversary of the deadly attack, Shute said the court faced various challenges while handling the case, including alleged attempts by the militant group to obstruct the judicial process.

He said the Office of the Military Prosecutor, working with various government agencies, launched investigations into the bombing shortly after the attack and eventually arrested a man accused of facilitating the operation.

According to Shute, the suspect had previously served as a driver for a senior Al-Shabaab leader, a connection he said was significant to the investigation.

The case reached the military court approximately two months after the bombing. Shute alleged that Al-Shabaab subsequently attempted to prevent the proceedings from continuing, including through the killing of his father, Ali Nur Shute.

“My father was killed to prevent the hearing of the man who facilitated the Zoobe bombing,” Shute said.

He added that efforts to suppress the case had resulted in further violence, but authorities had succeeded in apprehending a suspect who could provide important information about the attack.

Shute also discussed factors that contribute to radicalisation and recruitment into militant groups, pointing to political grievances and economic hardships as some of the conditions that can push individuals towards terrorism.

“Political grievances and economic difficulties are among the factors that cause a person to fall into terrorism,” he said.

The Zoobe bombing occurred on October 14, 2017, in Mogadishu, when a truck bomb exploded at a busy junction in one of the deadliest attacks in Somalia’s history. The attack killed hundreds of people and injured many others.

The anniversary has continued to serve as a reminder of the devastating impact of terrorism on Somali civilians and the challenges facing authorities in pursuing justice for victims.
