Somalia: Security Operations Against Illegal Roadblocks Underway in Hiraan Region

The Federal Government of Somalia has officially assumed responsibility for the overall security in the Hiiraan region, part of the Hir-Shabelle State. In response, security operations targeting illegal roadblocks have been launched.

Hiiraan’s Security Chief, Osman Abdi Wasuge, who is leading the tough operation, reported that armed groups responsible for setting up roadblocks between the towns of Baladweyne and Matabaan have been apprehended.

Wasuge issued a stern warning that the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) will dismantle any location identified as a site for illegal roadblocks, citing the severe security and economic impacts these obstacles have on the residents of Hiiraan.

The ongoing operation has so far reportedly dismantled over 15 roadblocks and resulted in the arrest of more than 10 individuals, who are now in NISA’s custody. The makeshift structures erected by these groups have been set ablaze.

Local business owners in Hiiraan had recently expressed their grievances to the Director of NISA, Abdullahi Mohamed Ali Sanbaloolshe, highlighting the roadblocks as significant hindrances to their operations and the region’s economic stability.
