Somalia has officially nullified the contentious maritime agreement between Somaliland and Ethiopia as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud officially signed a new law into effect. This move comes as a response to escalating diplomatic tensions and vehement opposition to the disputed The deal, which had been a source of diplomatic tension, was officially invalidated through this legislative action.
The move received endorsement from both houses of the Somali Parliament and government says it “reflects Somalia’s commitment to safeguarding its unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity in accordance with international law.”
President Hassan Sheikh emphasized the significance of the law as “a resolute stance in safeguarding Somalia’s national interests.”
The nullification of the controversial maritime agreement represents a noteworthy development in the ongoing diplomatic discourse, signaling Somalia’s assertiveness in shaping its regional relationships and protecting its sovereign rights.
Lawmaker Abdirahman Abdishakur and leader of Wadajir Party praised the president for swiftly signing the law, stating, “Thank you, Mr. President, for signing the law that nullifies the unlawful MoU between the Gov’t of Ethiopia and the Somaliland administration. The approval of this law by both houses of Parliament, followed by your prompt signing, serves as a powerful affirmation of the Federal Gov’t of Somalia’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding unity, sovereignty & territorial integrity in accordance with international law.”
