Somalia’s Deputy Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, Abdihakim Ashkir, participated in a World Refugee Day commemoration held in Mogadishu, reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting and supporting refugees, asylum seekers, returnees, and internally displaced persons.
The event was organized by the National Commission for Refugees and IDPs (NCRI) under the leadership of Commissioner Liban Abdi Egal and brought together representatives from government institutions, humanitarian organizations, civil society groups, the private sector, and refugee communities.
The commemoration highlighted the dignity, resilience, and rights of refugees who have been forced to flee conflict, persecution, and hardship in their home countries. Participants emphasized the importance of ensuring access to protection, justice, education, healthcare, employment opportunities, and other essential services.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Minister Ashkir reiterated the Ministry’s commitment “to advancing policies and programs aimed at strengthening protection mechanisms and expanding access to services for displaced populations” .
He stressed the importance of developing “durable solutions that support the long-term integration and well-being of refugees, asylum seekers, returnees, and internally displaced people across Somalia” .
The event also served as a platform to raise awareness about the challenges facing displaced communities and to promote greater cooperation among government agencies, humanitarian partners, and civil society organizations.
World Refugee Day is observed annually to honor the courage and resilience of refugees worldwide and to advocate for their rights and protection. Organizers said the gathering underscored Somalia’s continued commitment to supporting vulnerable populations and promoting inclusive solutions for displacement-related challenges.
