Japan and Somalia discuss Maritime Security and Indo-Pacific Cooperation

The Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, Mr. Yohei Onishi, held a private meeting with the Ambassador of Somalia to both China and Japan, Dr. Hodan Osman Abdi.

The meeting focused on strengthening relations between the federal Government of Somalia and Japan, particularly in areas of security, economic cooperation, and social development.

The Japanese minister emphasized that Somalia occupies a strategically important position as a crossroads of global shipping routes, connecting Europe, Asia, and Africa.

He also noted that Somalia has been among the countries implementing the Indo-Pacific connectivity framework in order to advance economic development.

The Somali ambassador in her part stressed that the Government of Somalia places special priority on its relationship with Japan. She expressed the country’s commitment to further expanding bilateral cooperation and to strengthening development projects Japan is carrying out in Somalia.

“The Government of Somalia gives special priority to its relationship with Japan, and we remain committed to further expanding bilateral cooperation and strengthening the development projects Japan is carrying out in Somalia.” she said

Both sides agreed to continue close cooperation to enhance the relationship between the two countries and to support international platforms that promote peace.
