Somalia launches National consultation on super El Niño preparedness

Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has launched a national consultation aimed at preparing the country for the potential impacts of a Super El Niño, bringing together government officials, religious leaders and women-led organisations from across the country.

SoDMA Commissioner Mahmoud Moallim opened the consultation on Sunday under the theme “Super El Niño Preparedness and Engagement of Women-Led Organizations.” The initiative seeks to strengthen national preparedness and promote coordinated action in response to potential climate-related disasters.

The consultation also highlighted the growing role of women-led organisations in disaster risk reduction, emergency response and community resilience.

Authorities said the engagement is intended to improve coordination among key stakeholders and ensure communities are better prepared to respond to possible climate shocks. Somalia remains highly vulnerable to droughts, floods and other climate-related emergencies, which have repeatedly affected livelihoods and displaced communities.

SoDMA said strengthening preparedness and ensuring the participation of women and local communities will be critical to reducing the humanitarian impact of future disasters.
