Somalia: Garowe Mayor: “The Man in Military Uniform Who Assaulted Mohamed Yare Will Face Justice”

Garowe Mayor Abdulqadir Mohamed Gedi has announced that a man dressed in military uniform who assaulted Mohamed Yare, a Yemeni national, in the city center will be brought before a court and face the justice system.

Speaking to the media, Mayor Gedi emphasized that such actions will not be tolerated, as they send a misleading message about Puntland’s security forces and the city of Garowe, which is home to people of various nationalities.

“I am pleased to have spent time this evening with Mohamed Yare and his family. We shared our concerns and expressed our sympathy regarding the incident, where a security guard at a business establishment assaulted him. Fortunately, the government responded swiftly, and the perpetrator who was wearing a military uniform but is not an officially recognized soldier has been arrested. He will be brought to justice. Moving forward, we plan to introduce designated uniforms and clear protocols for private security personnel working in commercial establishments,” Mayor Gedi stated.

Gedi also reassured the public that Mohamed Yare’s well-being is being fully taken care of.

“We have taken full responsibility for his living conditions and safety. We will stand by him and closely monitor his situation. We also appreciate the response from the people of Puntland and all Somalis who have reached out regarding this issue,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Yare’s father, Adil Hussein Salihi, expressed his hope that justice will be served through legal proceedings. He emphasized that his son was assaulted in public and deserves a fair resolution in court.
