Somalia has achieved a significant milestone by being elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) following a vote by the UN General Assembly on Thursday. Somalia secured 179 votes from the General Assembly, reflecting strong support from the international community.
Starting in January 2025, Somalia will hold the UNSC seat for a two-year term, during which it aims to uphold international law and ensure that diverse voices are heard within the Council. This marks a historic moment for Somalia, which last served on the UNSC 52 years ago.
The Somali diplomatic office at the UN emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating, “Our country will use its term on the UNSC to uphold international law and amplify all voices within the Council.” This commitment underscores Somalia’s dedication to contributing to global peace and security.

Somalia will join other newly elected non-permanent members Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, and Panama. These countries will replace the outgoing members Mozambique, Switzerland, Malta, Japan, and Ecuador. Together, they will work alongside the five permanent members—China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States—to address international issues and promote peace and stability.
As Somalia prepares to take on this important role, it looks forward to collaborating with fellow UNSC members and the broader international community.
