The National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has opened a national dialogue with state and local media organizations in Mogadishu to strengthen public preparedness for the potential impacts of Super El Niño 2026.
The dialogue, opened on Saturday by SoDMA Commissioner Mahamuud Moallim, brought together media stakeholders as part of efforts to improve coordination and ensure that communities receive timely and accurate information about potential climate-related risks.
The engagement focused on the important role of the media in disaster preparedness, particularly in communicating early warnings and helping communities understand and respond to emerging threats.
“Accurate, timely information saves lives, and stronger collaboration with the media is essential to ensure communities receive early warnings and are better prepared,” Commissioner Mahamuud said.
SoDMA has been working to strengthen national preparedness and response mechanisms amid concerns over the potential effects of extreme weather events and climate-related disasters.
The agency’s engagement with media organizations is aimed at improving the flow of reliable information between disaster management authorities and the public, particularly at the local level where communities may face heightened risks.
The dialogue also highlights the growing importance of coordinated communication in disaster risk reduction, with media outlets expected to play a key role in disseminating early warnings and public safety information.
SoDMA has called for stronger collaboration among government institutions, local authorities, communities and other stakeholders to enhance Somalia’s ability to prepare for and respond to potential disasters associated with Super El Niño 2026.
