Somalia defends Sovereignty amid debate over Somaliland and Red Sea Security

Somalia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ali Omar, has reaffirmed Somalia’s readiness to cooperate with international partners on maritime security, counterterrorism and Red Sea stability, while warning against initiatives that undermine the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In a statement posted on X, the minister appeared to respond to recent remarks by U.S. Republican Senator Ted Cruz, who has advocated for closer American engagement with Somaliland.

Ali Omar stressed that Somalia welcomes constructive international partnerships, particularly in efforts aimed at securing the Gulf of Aden and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, but insisted that such cooperation must respect Somalia’s constitutional framework and national unity.

“The narrative that Somalia can only contribute to regional security through fragmentation is historically false and strategically shortsighted,” the minister said.

He argued that a stable and united Somalia remains the strongest foundation for long-term security across the Horn of Africa and critical international maritime routes linking the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.

The minister further warned that efforts encouraging secessionist approaches could create broader regional instability despite appearing tactically beneficial in the short term.

The remarks come amid increasing international discussions surrounding security cooperation in the Horn of Africa and growing geopolitical interest in the Red Sea corridor, a strategically vital global shipping route.
