Somalia: Clashes Erupt Between Puntland Forces and ISIS in Bari Region

Fierce fighting has reportedly broken out between the security forces of Puntland State and ISIS militants in the mountainous area of Tog-Jaceel, Almiskaad, located in the Bari region.

Reports indicate that heavy shelling and airstrikes are ongoing in the battle zone.

According to various sources, U.S. fighter jets have carried out airstrikes targeting ISIS positions in the Tog-Jaeyl mountains, where the group has established strongholds and defensive positions.

The Puntland security forces, leading the operation, have stated that their objective is to push deeper into the rugged mountainous terrain, which is interconnected like a chain, in order to dislodge ISIS militants from their hideouts.

The terrorist group has reportedly deployed drones armed with explosives in the battle. However, Puntland authorities claim that their forces have successfully shot down some of these drones.

Meanwhile, wounded soldiers and officers have been transported to Garowe, the administrative capital of Puntland, for medical treatment. Some critically injured personnel have been airlifted abroad for specialized care.

Puntland State has recently launched the second phase of its military offensive against ISIS militants in the Bari region, with a focus on eradicating remaining strongholds in the Al-Miskat mountains. The operation, dubbed Hilaac, follows what Puntland authorities have described as “notable successes” in neutralizing key ISIS figures and reclaiming strategic locations.

With the second phase of Operation Hilaac now underway, Puntland leaders have emphasized that the fight against ISIS is far from over. However, the momentum gained through recent territorial advances and successful airstrikes has strengthened their resolve to push militant groups out of the region entirely.
