Somalia, China sign landmark deal granting duty-free access for Somali Fishery Products.

Somalia and China have signed a landmark agreement granting Somali fishery products duty-free access to the Chinese market, marking a major step forward in bilateral economic cooperation and the development of Somalia’s blue economy.

The agreement was signed by Somalia’s Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Ahmed Hassan Aden, and the Chinese Ambassador to Somalia, Wang Yu, in a move expected to significantly expand export opportunities for Somali seafood products.

According to state media, the agreement will allow high-quality Somali fishery products to enter the Chinese market without import duties, improving market access and strengthening trade relations between the two countries.

Officials said the deal is expected to boost Somalia’s fisheries sector by increasing export revenues, creating employment opportunities across the fisheries value chain, and attracting new investment in fish processing facilities and cold-chain infrastructure.

The agreement also aims to promote the sustainable development of Somalia’s blue economy while improving the livelihoods of fishing communities through greater access to international markets.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, officials described the agreement as a new chapter in Somalia–China economic relations, reflecting the growing partnership between the two countries and their shared commitment to expanding trade and supporting Somalia’s economic development.

The duty-free market access is expected to enhance the competitiveness of Somali fishery products in one of the world’s largest consumer markets, providing new opportunities for exporters and contributing to the long-term growth of the country’s fisheries industry.
