Somalia officially commenced its two-year tenure as a member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on January 1, 2025, joining four other new members—Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, and Panama—for the 2025–2026 cycle.
Somalia’s membership marks a significant milestone as the country replaces Mozambique to occupy the third African seat on the council, alongside Algeria and Sierra Leone. This represents an important platform for Somalia to play a more active role in shaping global peace and security policies.
Somalia’s inclusion in the UNSC comes at a time when the country is making notable progress in political stability, economic revitalization, and security reforms. As a UNSC member, Somalia will have the opportunity to contribute to discussions and decisions on global issues, including counterterrorism, climate change, and conflict resolution.
In a statement, Somali officials expressed their commitment to using this position to advocate for the interests of Africa and to highlight pressing challenges facing the Horn of Africa, including security, humanitarian aid, and economic development.
Somalia joins the Security Council alongside 14 other member states, including the five permanent members—China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States—and 10 non-permanent members elected for rotating terms.
The UNSC is the United Nations’ principal body for maintaining international peace and security, and Somalia’s presence on the council underscores its growing stature on the global stage.
