Somalia and Türkiye discuss challenges facing Somali Community in Turkey

Somalia’s Ambassador to Türkiye, Fathudin Ali Mohamed, held a meeting with Turkish Minister of Interior, Ali Yerlikaya, to discuss growing challenges facing Somali nationals residing in Türkiye.

According to the Somali Embassy in Ankara, the meeting focused on “addressing legal and residency concerns raised by members of the Somali community” , many of whom have reported difficulties in renewing residence permits and securing necessary documentation.

Ambassador Fathudin emphasized the importance of ensuring that Somali residents in Türkiye enjoy access to basic legal and social protections. “We discussed ways to facilitate residency processes and resolve the challenges Somali citizens face in compliance with Turkish law,” he said, adding that Minister Yerlikaya expressed willingness to cooperate closely with the Somali Embassy to find lasting solutions.

The ambassador thanked the Government of Türkiye for its continued support and partnership, noting that collaboration between the two nations remains strong in areas of education, health, and community welfare.

Recently, several Somali nationals in Türkiye have voiced concerns over tightening residency laws, with some reportedly detained or facing deportation due to documentation issues. The Somali Embassy has pledged to remain engaged with Turkish authorities to ensure the protection of its citizens’ rights.
