Somalia Affirms Recognition of Taiwan as Part of the People’s Republic of China

The Federal Government of Somalia declared its recognition of Taiwan as “an integralinalienable part of People’s Republic of China,” solidifying its commitment to the One China Policy. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that this position has been a cornerstone of Somalia’s foreign policy, reflecting adherence to principles outlined in the United Nations Charter.

“Somalia, based on its commitment to the principles defined in the United Nations Charter, advocates non-interference in the internal affairs of all nations,” stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, underlining Somalia’s dedication to promoting international harmony and respecting the independence of sovereign nations.

This declaration comes amid Taiwan’s close relationship with Somaliland, a region that declared itself independent from Somalia. Somaliland’s recognition by Taiwan has been a point of contention, with the Somali government strongly condemning such recognition.

In a recent Taiwanese election, Lai Ching-te emerged victorious in the presidential race. The high voter turnout received praise from global leaders, highlighting the democratic process in the country.

However, the Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed concern over the U.S. State Department’s statement, alleging a breach of promises to maintain only cultural, economic, and informal ties with Taiwan. The statement indicates a growing geopolitical complexity as nations navigate diplomatic relations and the delicate balance between recognizing territories and adhering to established policies.
