Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) has accused forces affiliated with former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed of involvement in activities that threaten national security, vowing not to compromise on maintaining public safety.
In a statement, NISA said it had documented three security-related incidents involving armed personnel allegedly operating under the command of the former president.
The incidents reportedly occurred in the Wadajir and Waaberi districts of Mogadishu.
According to NISA, evidence gathered by the agency indicates that armed militiamen carrying AK-47 rifles, BKM machine guns and RPG launchers forcibly entered houses in the Tiintiinley neighbourhood of Wadajir district.
“The evidence gathered by NISA indicates that armed militiamen carrying AK-47 rifles, BKM machine guns and RPG launchers forcibly entered houses in the Tiintiinley neighbourhood of Wadajir district,” the agency said in its statement.
The agency also reported two incidents between June 24 and 27 in which soldiers allegedly affiliated with Sharif Sheikh Ahmed obstructed security operations conducted by government forces in the General Da’uud area.
NISA said it would not allow its personnel to be drawn into political disputes, stressing that its responsibility to protect citizens and maintain security remained paramount.
“NISA will not allow its forces to be drawn into political disputes, nor will it compromise on ensuring the security and safety of the Somali people. The agency remains committed to fulfilling its legal mandate, maintaining stability in the capital and preventing any actions that threaten public safety,” the NISA statement said.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to fulfilling its legal duties, preserving stability in the capital and preventing any actions that could endanger public safety.
The statement comes amid discussions on social media in recent hours over reports of a possible government security operation targeting the homes of opposition politicians.
