The Heritage Institute for Policy Studies has launched a one-day conference in Mogadishu to examine the development of Somalia’s Hirshabelle State, focusing on its challenges, achievements and opportunities.
The conference brings together various officials, researchers and stakeholders, including individuals who participated in the establishment of Hirshabelle and those currently serving in its administration.
The event features research findings on Hirshabelle’s governance, with participants given opportunities to ask questions and engage with panelists on issues affecting the state.
Dr. Yusuf Sheikh Omar, a senior researcher at HIPS, said the conference comes at a significant time following recent elections in Hirshabelle. He explained that the research was conducted in the state and would be complemented by information and perspectives shared by participants.
“This forum focuses on Hirshabelle State and comes at a time when elections have recently taken place. Most of the invited participants are from the state, where we conducted our research. We also want our research findings and those shared by others to complement one another and provide a common direction.” Dr. Yusuf said.
Dr. Abdirashid Ismail, Deputy Director of Research at the Heritage Institute, said the study seeks to assess what Hirshabelle has achieved over the past decade, identify shortcomings and determine what remains to be completed.
“Today, we are presenting what went right and what went wrong in Hirshabelle’s administration over the past 10 years. The study will identify what remains unfinished and what has been accomplished, while offering recommendations,” Dr. Abdirashid said.
The Heritage Institute is an independent research organisation that focuses on policy analysis, research and studies on Somalia’s political and social affairs.
Since its establishment, the institute has organised various forums to document and discuss issues shaping the country’s development.
