Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud Meets Finland’s Special Envoy for Peace in the Horn of Africa

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has yesterday welcomed Finland’s Special Envoy on Peace Mediation in the Horn of Africa, Ahmed Suldaan Said, to Villa Somalia in Mogadishu. The high-level meeting underscored Somalia and Finland’s commitment to collaborative efforts toward peace, stability, and a strengthened international rules-based order.

The discussions centered on regional developments within the Horn of Africa, an area facing numerous security, humanitarian, and political challenges. Somalia has been at the forefront of addressing these issues and seeks to continue its progress through both national initiatives and constructive partnerships with the international community.

During the meeting, President Mohamud and Special Envoy Said emphasized the importance of collaboration to build long-term peace and stability in the region. They highlighted the benefits of joint diplomatic and mediation efforts, underscoring the role that Finland, with its rich tradition of peace mediation, can play in fostering constructive dialogue among regional actors.

“Somalia is committed to a peaceful, prosperous Horn of Africa,” President Mohamud said. “Our partnership with Finland, and with other international partners, strengthens our approach to sustainable peace in the region.”

The meeting also reaffirmed both Somalia’s and Finland’s shared dedication to upholding the international rules-based order, which provides a framework for global peace, stability, and security. As the Horn of Africa navigates complex issues that range from political conflicts to humanitarian crises, Somalia and Finland aim to lead by example through peaceful dialogue and respect for international norms.

In recent years, Finland has taken a proactive role in supporting peace initiatives in Africa, with Special Envoy Said’s appointment highlighting the country’s ongoing commitment to the Horn of Africa.

President Mohamud said that the engagement with Finland signals its openness to collaborative efforts to address regional issues and ensure a prosperous future for the nation and the Somali people.
