Somali Parliament Ratifies UN Convention on Combating Organized Crime

In a move toward international cooperation, Somalia’s House of the People ratified the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) on Wednesday. The decision saw overwhelming support, with 138 members of parliament voting in favor, while only two opposed and three abstained.

The convention, commonly referred to as the Palermo Convention, was adopted by the UN General Assembly in November 2000 and came into effect in September 2003. It is considered the main global legal instrument aimed at combatting organized crime across borders. Somalia’s ratification marks a pivotal step in the country’s commitment to addressing the challenges posed by transnational organized crime.

In a statement following the vote, Somali officials highlighted that the approval reflects the nation’s dedication to strengthening both national and international efforts to combat criminal activities such as human trafficking, drug smuggling, and terrorism. This move also underscores Somalia’s broader engagement in international treaties and its aim to foster cooperation with other nations in curbing organized crime networks.
