Mogadishu – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, . Amb. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi Ahmed, has departed for New York, leading the Somali delegation to the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly. This session, scheduled for June 6, will include the election of non-permanent members to the UN Security Council.
Somalia is the sole candidate for the seat designated to the East Africa sub-region and, barring any unforeseen developments, is set to serve a two-year term on the Security Council from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2026. This candidacy is in line with the rotational framework of the Africa Group and was formally endorsed at the 44th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Executive Council in February 2024.
The announcement of Somalia’s candidacy dates back to 2018, reflecting the nation’s long-standing commitment to international diplomacy and peacekeeping. Somalia, which gained independence and joined the United Nations in 1960, has previously held a seat on the Security Council during the 1971-1972 term, where it actively contributed to discussions and decisions on global peace and security.
