The Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) has announced a successful operation against al-Shabaab militants in the Yaaqle area, northeast of Bal’ad town. According to NISA, the operation targeted a suspected gathering site for militants, resulting in the death of 19 fighters. Witnesses reported fires in the area following the operation, suggesting that explosive devices may have been inadvertently hit during the assault.
This operation marks the second government-led offensive in Yaaqle within five days. During a similar operation on Sunday, NISA reported the deaths of 27 al-Shabaab militants. The rapid succession of these actions highlights Somalia’s intensified efforts to dismantle al-Shabaab strongholds and limit the group’s operational capacity in the region.
In a related development, the U.S. Africa Command confirmed the crash of a U.S. combat drone in southern Somalia. While there has been speculation about the cause, officials downplayed the possibility of it being shot down, noting that an investigation is underway and more details will be provided as they become available.
The coordinated efforts by Somali forces and international partners military sources say underscore an ongoing commitment to countering al-Shabaab’s influence and securing areas previously under militant control.
