Somali Diaspora Denounces Ethiopia’s Actions, Urges Nobel Prize Committee to Revoke Abiy Ahmed’s Accolade

The Somali diaspora has vehemently voiced its opposition to Ethiopia’s recent actions, condemning what they perceive as a threat to Somalia’s independence and unity. The focal point of their discontent is the so-called Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Somaliland and Ethiopia, viewed as a move by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to forcibly control Somalia’s Red Sea coastline.

In a bold stance against these developments, the diaspora is now urging the Nobel Peace Prize committee to reconsider the accolade bestowed upon Abiy Ahmed in 2019. The diaspora argues that “the Prime Minister’s aggressive actions in the Horn of Africa pose a significant risk to the region’s stability and could exacerbate existing challenges such as drought, poverty, and hunger.”

The petition emphasizes the potential humanitarian crisis that could unfold due to forced control over Somalia’s Red Sea coastline, leading to an influx of refugees and prolonged displacement. Furthermore, the diaspora expresses concern that Abiy’s actions may “inadvertently provide an opportunity for the Al-Shabaab organization to exploit the situation,” complicating the efforts of the Federal Government of Somalia to eradicate the group.

The petition contends that the revocation of the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is essential to” maintain the integrity and purpose “of this esteemed accolade. The diaspora asserts that the Nobel Peace Prize should not be seen as an endorsement for leaders engaging in actions that could escalate conflicts in the region.
