In an effort to support families affected by El-Nino, the National Disaster Management Agency (SODMA) has dispatched special aid from the Russian Federal Government to the Puntland and Jubbaland Regional Governments. Two boats loaded with relief supplies from Mogadishu set sail for Kismayo and Garakad, facilitating the distribution of aid to those in need.
The aid, organized by SODMA, addresses the challenges faced by regions impacted by autumn rains and river flooding. SODMA Chairman Mohamud Maallim Abdulle revealed that the Russian donation includes 53,045 liters of wheat, equivalent to 2,387 tons. This substantial contribution, transported on boats provided by the Jubbaland State Government, aims to assist 54,000 families.
Puntland Regional Government has also joined the relief efforts, sending 18,892 liters, equivalent to 850 metric tons, to the Port of Garagad. This contribution is anticipated to support 17,000 families grappling with the conditions exacerbated by El-Nino.
Mohamud Maallim Abdulle expressed optimism about additional donations, mentioning that the boat sent to Jubbaland is the second, while Puntland’s contribution marks the first. The National Disaster Management Agency has previously extended humanitarian aid to regions such as South West, Hir-Shabelle, and Galmudug, responding to the aftermath of floods and the swelling of the Shabelle River.
