The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mahamuud Moallim, has arrived in Beledweyne, Hiiraan region, as authorities step up preparations for potential flooding and strengthen emergency response efforts.
The Commissioner said his visit is focused on assessing flood risks, coordinating with local authorities and engaging communities on measures to reduce the impact of flooding and El Niño-related weather conditions.
“Flood preparedness and response are my priority in Beledweyne,” Mahamuud said in a post on X. “I am engaging local authorities and communities, assessing flood risks and promoting early action against flooding and El Niño impacts.”
He urged residents to clear waterways and drainage channels to allow water to flow freely, while advising communities to avoid areas vulnerable to flooding.
Mahamuud also called for early action to reduce risks to lives and property, stressing the importance of community preparedness before flooding occurs.
Beledweyne, located along the Shabelle River, has repeatedly faced flooding, making early warning, drainage management and emergency preparedness important components of local disaster response efforts.
SoDMA said its efforts are aimed at strengthening coordination and ensuring communities are better prepared to respond to possible flooding and other climate-related emergencies.
