Former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed issued a serious statement ahead of April 12—Somali Armed Forces Day marking the founding anniversary of the Somali National Forces
In his message, Sheikh Sharif first congratulated the heroes of the Somali Armed Forces on the 66th anniversary since the force was established, describing the day as significant and full of meaning.
He noted that this year’s celebration comes at a sensitive time for the country, as fighting continues against Al-Shabaab and some servicemen remain on the front lines defending the nation and the people.
Sheikh Sharif urged the military across all branches to double their efforts in the fight against terrorism, emphasizing the importance of staying focused on the defense mission.
The former president also delivered a warning to the armed forces, urging them not to become involved in political matters or follow orders based on political interests.
He said that political division among the national forces harms the army’s reputation, undermines its neutrality, and reduces public trust.
“Some leaders appears to be dividing the national army for personal political interests,” Sheikh Sharif said, adding that commanders should be careful not to accept incorrect orders that could damage the forces’ neutrality and the confidence of Somali citizens.
His warning comes amid recent operations in South West Somalia, after forces entered Baidoa and removed the administration led by President Abdiaziz Laftagareen.
