Race Intensifies for Speaker’s Seat after Adan Madoobe’s exit

A tough political race has begun for the Speaker of the House seat that was vacated by Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madoobe.

Madobe was elected President of South West State on Thursday following an election held in Baidoa, the capital of the Bay region.

With the position now vacant, politicians from South West State where the seat is seen as a key one have started mobilizing to fill the vacancy.

MP Sadaad Mohamed Nuur alias Caliyow, who is also the Deputy Minister at Somalia’s Ministry of Interior, announced in Baidoa that he intends to run for the Speaker’s position. He asked lawmakers to support his candidacy.

He said his nomination was aligned with guidance from the President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, as well as the Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, and other senior figures.

“I want to make it clear that I am running for the Speaker seat to fill the vacancy, with the guidance of the President of the Federal Government and the Prime Minister, and with the support of respected elders,” Sadaad said.

He further appealed to MPs from South West State, stating that he wants to work to deliver a unified Parliament and help ensure lawmakers serve with dignity and respect.

There are also other political figures reportedly positioning themselves for the same role. Among them is the Minister of Ports, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Jaamac, who recently gained an MP seat.

Reports suggest Jaamac is currently running a quiet campaign aimed at securing the Speaker position, which could further intensify the race.

The Somali Parliament is expected to resume to session soon , after its term was extended by one year, in line with other Federal Government institutions.
