Puntland leader Deni embarks on secret trip to UAE amid heightened political tensions.

Puntland State President Said Abdullahi Deni has reportedly left on a secret trip to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) early Tuesday morning, in what observers see as part of his administration’s growing political and financial ties with Abu Dhabi.

Unlike previous occasions, Puntland’s Presidency, which often publicly announces the President’s travel plans, kept this trip under wraps. Sources indicate that President Deni is expected to meet senior Emirati officials, though the agenda of the discussions remains undisclosed.

The development comes shortly after Jubaland leader Ahmed Mohamed Islam “Madobe” also traveled discreetly to the UAE on a similar invitation. Deni and Madobe, close political allies, have long positioned themselves as critics of Somalia’s Federal Government. According to insiders, the two leaders have recently held phone discussions on the country’s political climate, strategies to exert pressure on Mogadishu, and other matters of mutual interest.

Diplomatic sources suggest that the UAE is seeking to play a mediating role between Somalia’s Federal Government and the administrations of Puntland and Jubaland, following years of political deadlock. Recently, a high-level Emirati delegation visited Mogadishu and held talks with federal authorities on reconciliation and stability.

The UAE has been a key regional player in Somalia, providing financial, humanitarian, and security support to various federal and state institutions. Its latest outreach underscores Abu Dhabi’s growing role in shaping Somalia’s fragile political landscape.
