Special Session in Las-Anod endorses resolution prosecuting Senior Somaliland Military Personnel

A special sitting held today in Las-Anod saw members of the North-East State parliament approve a resolution aimed at bringing senior officials of Somaliland’s administration before the court.

The decision follows the arrest of top military personnel from Somaliland who were detained after fighting that took place in the Sool region.

The resolution calls for the prosecution of the held officers, including charges related to attacks against the people of Laascaanood and the prolonged civil conflict that occurred over an extended period.

After the session, several lawmakers told the media that the step had long been expected by the administration, but it was delayed several times due to technical and security-related circumstances.

The Goojecadde battle took place on August 25, 2023. It resulted in the capture of officers and officials associated with Somaliland’s administration.

The clashes began after nearly eight months of siege and continuous shelling in Las-Anod, which eventually led to Somaliland forces being completely removed from the areas around the city creating a major shift in local governance and security conditions.

During the Gooja-cadde fighting, several soldiers and senior officers from Somaliland’s military were reportedly detained, including Senior Military officer identified as Feisal Abdi Bootaan.

It remains unclear when the court proceedings will begin or the exact date the detained officers will be formally brought before the court.
